TY - JOUR AB - In recent years several guidelines for obesity management have been published which provided more than 700 recommendations. In general, the guidelines have recommended a multidisciplinary obesity management with the involvement of different professional figures. Excluding few general recommendations, the role of the psychologist is not well defined or is mainly limited to the assessment, management of psychosocial comorbidities and screening of contraindications to bariatric surgery. The guidelines, among others, recommend the improvement of the patients’ adherence to the lifestyle changes required for the obesity management mainly addressing the behavioral and biological factors that regulate food intake and energy expenditure. However, they ignore the numerous cognitive processes, highlighted by recent research, that influence the adherence to these complex behaviors. For this reason, the Associazione Italiana Disturbi dell’Alimentazione e del Peso (AIDAP), in this position paper, recommends to completely reconsider the role of the psychologist, not only in the assessment, but also in the obesity management. Indeed, the psychologist, with a specific training on obesity, is the professional who has the skills to identify and address the psychological processes that influence the patients’ adherence to the behaviors required for weight loss and maintenance.
